Jalapeño Cheddar Black Bean Burgers

Jalapeño Cheddar Black Bean Burgers

Black bean burgers are a delicious way to bring bold, satisfying flavor to your table—and when you add jalapeño and sharp cheddar, you've got a burger that rivals any traditional beef patty. Whether you're cooking for vegetarians, looking to mix up your weeknight rotation, or simply craving something with a little kick, this recipe delivers.

Why Black Bean Burgers?

Black beans are packed with protein and fiber, making them hearty enough to hold their own as a burger base. They have a naturally earthy flavor that pairs beautifully with bold seasonings. Unlike some veggie burgers that fall apart on the grill, a well-made black bean patty holds together beautifully and develops a satisfying crust when cooked.

The Jalapeño Cheddar Difference

Fresh jalapeños bring heat and brightness, while aged cheddar adds richness and depth. Together, they transform a simple black bean burger into something memorable. The cheese helps bind the patties and creates pockets of melted flavor throughout. If you prefer less heat, remove the jalapeño seeds before chopping. For more spice, leave them in or add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the mix.

Building Your Burger

Start with two cans of black beans, drained and rinsed. Mash them until mostly broken down—you want some texture, not a smooth paste. Mix in finely diced jalapeños, shredded cheddar, breadcrumbs, an egg to bind everything together, minced garlic, cumin, and a touch of smoked paprika. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Form into four thick patties and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. This helps them hold their shape during cooking.

Cooking Methods

Grill these burgers over medium heat for about 4–5 minutes per side, or pan-fry them in a cast-iron skillet with a little oil until golden and crispy on the outside. The key is medium heat—too hot and the outside burns before the inside warms through. A light brush of oil on the grill grates or skillet prevents sticking.

Serving Suggestions

Toast your buns and load them up with your favorite toppings. Crispy lettuce, ripe tomato, red onion, and a dollop of sour cream or crema balance the heat beautifully. A squeeze of lime juice brightens everything. Serve alongside a cold slaw or crispy fries for a complete meal that everyone at the table will enjoy.
